Lexington, S.C.—UMBC baseball dropped the finale of the Lexington County vs. Cancer Tournament with an 8-0 loss to St. John's on Sunday afternoon. The Retrievers had multiple chances, but could not cash in during the contest.
UMBC falls to 0-3 on the year while St. John's improves to 7-0 in 2017.
Ryan McAuliffe picked up his first win for the Red Storm, while UMBC starter Matt Chanin (Olney, Md./Sherwood) earned the loss to go to 0-1.
The Retrievers started off the first with a single from Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley), and would advance to second on an Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) single. However the threat would end there as St. John's got out of the jam.
Chanin kept the Red Storm at bay for most of the game, keeping them scoreless through four.
However in the fifth, the Johnnies would capitalize on a couple of Retriever errors, taking a 2-0 lead. They would tack on another in the six to take a 3-0 lead into the seventh.
UMBC would threaten in that inning, as Zack DeThomasis (Rennsalaer, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) got a pinch hit double to left. Connor Hax (Bowie, Md./Bishop McNamara) followed up with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners with one away. After Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va./WT Woodson) walk loaded the bases, the Red Storm once again got themselves out of the jam with two strikeouts to end the inning.
St. John's would add five more runs in the last two innings to seal an 8-0 victory on Sunday.
Chanin went six complete innings, giving up just seven hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts. Seven different Retrievers recorded hits, including DeThomasis and Hax who went 1-1.
The Retrievers will be back in action next weekend with a three game set against Gardner-Webb, starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
