Casali, Austin Lead UMBC Baseball to 3-2 Victory Against Stony Brook on Friday

Lowell, Mass.— UMBC baseball picked up their first America East Tournament victory since 2015 in a 3-2 triumph over Stony Brook on Friday. The Retrievers got a big contribution from Andrew Casali (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) with three hits and a big home run.

UMBC moves to 21-23 on the year while Stony Brook falls to 26-25.

The Retrievers got things going right away with a lead off home run from Andrew Casali in the first. He took the pitch and blasted his second home run of the year off the right field foul pole to give UMBC a 1-0 lead.

Stony Brook would put a runner on either second or third in every middle inning, but each time Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) was up to the challenge, getting strikeouts and ground outs to end the innings.

UMBC would add to their lead in the fourth on a Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) RBI single that scored Hunter Dolshun (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley). Dolshun doubled to lead off the inning.

They would make it 3-0 in the fifth on a Dolshun sacrifice fly that scored Casali who singled earlier in the inning.

The Seawolves got on the board after a pair of Retriever errors in the seventh, and cut it to 3-2 after a Dylan Resk solo home run in the eighth.

However the Retrievers would shut down Stony Brook in the ninth, as Jacob Christian (Nokesville, Va./Patriot) picked up his first save in a 3-2 win.

Casali led the Retriever offense, going 3-4 with a pair of singles and a home run with two runs scored. Austin picked up win number four after going 5.1 innings with six strikeouts.

The Retrievers will take on Albany tomorrow at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship round on Sunday. The loser will play the winner of Binghamton vs. Stony Brook/Maine at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
