UMBC Baseball Returns Home to Face Georgetown and Coppin State in Midweek Action

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC baseball will return to Alumni Field for a pair of midweek contests against Georgetown and Coppin State on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Retrievers are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of UMass Lowell this past weekend, as UMBC falls to 10-18, 4-5 AE.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the contests at 10-18 after dropping three against UMass Lowell this past weekend. The Retrievers were outscored 20-3 in the three games to fall to 10-18, 4-5 AE on the year.

-Freshmen Joey Goodwin (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Andres Machado (Coral Gables, Fla.) are leading the team with batting averages of .353 and .304 respectively. Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) leads the team with 17 RBI while Zack Bright (Fairfax Station, Va.) and AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) each have 25 hits to lead the team.

-Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Appalachian State) leads the pitching staff with a .165 ERA in 15 appearances. He has thrown a team best 32.2 innings with seven saves and 49 strikeouts. Mitchell Wilson leads the rotation with a 3.99 ERA, going 2-1 in seven starts.

Scouting the Hoyas:

-The Hoyas enter the contest at 13-20 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Most recently, Georgetown swept a three-game series this weekend against George Mason. The Hoyas have been stellar at home, going 8-3 in 11 contests to just 3-10 on the road.

-Eddie McCabe leads the team with a .320 average and a team best 41 hits with nine doubles and 27 RBI. Jake Bernstein provides the power with three home runs.

-Left hander Jacob Grzebinski will throw for the Hoyas on Tuesday. He is 2-1 in five starts with a  7.61 ERA. He has thrown 23.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.

Scouting the Eagles:

-The Eagles are 13-16-1 on the year and are 12-2 in MEAC action. Coppin State most recently won two of three against Delaware State by scores of 11-4 and 10-4. The third game of their series was postponed.

-Coppin State has a slew of players hitting over .300 led by Derek Lohr at .385. He has 37 hits in 96 at bats with seven doubles and 17 RBI. Nazier McIlwain has driven in 30 runs while hitting .351 with a team best 39 hits.

-Jahmon Taylor leads the pitching staff with a 3.18 ERA in seven starts, leading the team with 46 strikeouts. Aaron Rea has thrown the most innings at 47.2 in nine appearances and six starts.

All-Time Series:

-The Retrievers and Hoyas will be meeting for the 53rd time in the series with UMBC holding a 34-18 lead. UMBC has won the last three meetings including a series sweep last year. The Retriever have not lost at home to the Hoyas since 2012.

-Coppin State and UMBC will be meeting for the 49th time with the Retrievers holding a commanding 46-2 advantage. Last year the Eagles defeated the Retrievers for the first time since 2004.

On Deck: 

-UMBC will travel to Long Island to take on America East rival Stony Brook this Saturday and Sunday. The Retrievers and Seawolves will play a pair on Saturday with a single on Sunday, both days at noon.
