Men's Lacrosse Falls to Johns Hopkins at Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic

Baltimore—Eleventh-ranked Johns Hopkins used an efficient offense in the first half and a dominating face-off effort in the second half to defeat UMBC, 16-5, in the Konica-Minolta Face-Off Classic played before 17,057 fans at M&T Bank Stadium.

 

The Blue Jays improved to 5-1 on the campaign, while the Retrievers dropped their third consecutive game to fall to 1-3.

 

UMBC sophomore midfielder Dave Brown (Coopersburg, Pa./The Hill School) scored a pair of goals for UMBC, while sophomore attackman Joe Lustgarten (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) contributed a goal and an assist.   

 

Hopkins scored just five seconds into the game and built a 3-0 lead at the with 4:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Retrievers briefly cut the deficit to 3-1 as sophomore Scott Hopmann(Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) scored his 7th goal of the season with 1:10 in the stanza, but the Blue Jays closed the quarter with a midfield dodge and score by John Ranagan with 11 seconds to play .

 

UMBC appeared to settle down as the teams exchanged four goals to open the second quarter. Junior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) and Brown equalized Blue Jay scores and UMBC was within 6-3 with 8:28 left in the second quarter.

 

But the Blue Jays scored three goals in a 3:11 span to take a 9-3 halftime lead. Hopkins scored on nine of 21 first-half shots.

 

JHU won all 11 face-offs in the second half and built the lead to 13-3 before Lustgarten finished on a two-on-one with 1:14 to play in the third quarter. The Retrievers went 22:04 without a score.

 

UMBC sophomore netminder Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn School)  made his first start of the season and recorded 11 saves.

 

Blue Jay attackman Chris Boland led all scorers with five goals and an assist while Ranagan added two goals and three helpers.

 

The Retrievers face national power Maryland in College Park on Friday, March 18 at 8:00 p.m.
