Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC softball team (8-24, 3-5) travels to Maine (14-16, 5-2) to take on the Black Bears in their second to last road series on the season this weekend. They are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 with game one scheduled to begin at noon and game two at 2:30 PM. The third game will be a single game on Sunday, April 15 at 11:00 AM.
UMBC is coming off a doubleheader against Stony Brook this past Wednesday. The Retrievers took the first game, 9-7, thanks to Kim Puccio's (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) complete game and Tori Alexander's (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) 3-for-3 effort. They would drop the second game by a score of 12-2.
Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) leads the Retriever offense, batting .355 on the season. Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) brings the rain, leading the team in home runs (three) and RBI (15). Puccio holds down the pitching staff, with team highs in wins (seven), innings pitched (118.1), strikeouts (55), and ERA (3.96).
Scouting the Black Bears:
Maine is coming off a conference doubleheader of their own this past Wednesday against UMass Lowell. They split the doubleheader, dropping game one, 1-0, before taking the second game, 3-0.
On offense, Maine is lead by Rachel Carlson who is batting a team high .340. Maddie Decker leads the team with 20 RBI, while being tied with Alyssa Derrick for the lead in home runs with three. Annie Kennedy leads the team in the circle, going 6-4 with a 1.58 ERA. She has a team high 79.2 innings pitched and 57 strikeouts.
