Boiling Springs, N.C.—UMBC baseball got out to a fast start, but Gardner-Webb scored four unanswered run to comeback in a 4-3 UMBC loss on Friday. Five different Retrievers recorded hits in the contest, as UMBC falls to 0-4 on the year.
The Retrievers would add to their lead, thanks to an RBI single by Christian Torres (Miami, Fla./Miami Senior) in the fourth. Torres would advance to second on the play after a throwing error, as Collin Stack (Jamestown, N.Y./Monroe CC) scored. Carroll would strike again with another RBI groundout, once again scoring DeThomasis.
In the bottom of the inning, Gardner-Webb would tie the game on a pair of wild pitches and a single to make it 3-3 after four.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would then take the lead in the bottom of the eight on an RBI double, holding the Retrievers in the ninth for the win.
UMBC starter Michael Austin (Eldersburg, Md./Bethune-Cookman) went five complete, striking out three giving up just three earned runs.
Carroll led the offense with two RBI, as five Retrievers recorded hits on Friday.
Game two of the three game series will commence tomorrow, Saturday March 4 at 2 p.m.
