UMBC Baseball Kicks Off Five-Game Home Stand with Towson and Eastern Shore

Baltimore, Md.-- The Retrievers are back in Baltimore to kick off a five-game home stand, starting with Towson and Eastern Shore on Tuesday and Wednesday. UMBC comes into the midweek at 16-16 on the year, most recently dropping an America East series to UAlbany, 2-1 this weekend. The Retrievers won game one, but fell in the final two.

Scouting the Retrievers:

-UMBC comes into the midweek contests at 16-16 on the year after dropping two of three to UAlbany this weekend in America East play. The Retrievers are just 4-4 at home this year, going 11-12 in game played away from Baltimore.

-Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) continue to pace the Retriever offense, batting .357 and .336 respectively. Torres is also leading the team with 33 RBI, three triples, and 41 hits and is one of four players with four home runs. Pinkston leads UMBC with 30 runs scored and has 16 stolen bases, having started in all 32 games.

-Cooper Adams (Potomac, Md./St. John's College) leads the Retriever pitching staff with a 3.77 ERA in 31.0 innings. Stephen Schoch (Laurel, Md./Good Counsel/Appalachian State) has struck out a team best 38 batters in 27.2 innings with two saves.

Scouting the Tigers:

-Towson heads down I-695 at 7-27, 3-6 CAA after taking two of three from CAA foe Hofstra this past weekend. The Tigers won the first two before falling in the finale on Long Island. Towson is 3-18 in road contests compared to a 4-9 record at home.

-Javon Fields leads the team at the dish, batting .281 having started and played in all but one game this year. He has amassed 36 hits in 128 at bats with 22 runs scored, seven doubles and three triples. Zach Piazza has driven in a team best 20 runs as the Tigers are batting just .222 as a team.

-Towson will start Dallas Repine against the Retrievers. Repine has a 12.05 ERA in seven appearances and six starts this year going 0-4 in those starts. He has given up 25 earned runs with 12 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.

Scouting the Hawks:

-Eastern Shore crosses over the Bay Bridge into Baltimore at 9-30 on the year, going 3-11 in MEAC action after a three-game sweep at the hands of Norfolk State this weekend. The Hawks are 3-15 in true road games this year, going 6-13 at home.

-Dillon Oxyer is the only Hawk to have played in and started every game this year, leading the team with 38 hits in 143 at bats for a .266 average. Brian Cordell is batting a team best .289 with Marcus Brown leading the team with 15 RBI.

-On the hill, Chris Sanders has a 4.37 ERA, best on the staff in 14 appearances this year. Marty Tolson Jr. leads the rotation with a 5.26 ERA in nine starts, striking out 38 and giving up 28 earned runs in 47.0 innings.

All-Time Series:

-The Tigers and Retrievers will be meeting for the 93rd time all-time dating back to 1970 with the Tigers holding a 49-42-1 advantage in the series. Last year the Retrievers swept the season series outscoring Towson 19-4 in two games. The Retrievers have gotten the better of their cross-county rivals recently, going 7-2 against the Tigers since 2014.

-UMBC and Eastern Shore will be meeting for 14th time with UMBC winning all 13 of the previous meetings. This will be the first matchup between the two since 2015 where UMBC won both games that year by scores of 8-0 and 5-0.

On Deck:

-The Retrievers close out their home stand with a weekend set against Hartford on Friday and Saturday. The two will play a double header on Friday at noon with the series finale on Saturday at 6 p.m.
