Retrievers Drop Heartbreaker, 3-2 to Stony Brook in Extra Innings

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC baseball held the lead for most of the game, until the Seawolves tied it in the seventh and ultimately won in the 11th to take the series on Sunday. Joe Milkowski (Lackawanna, N.Y.) and AJ Wright (Cherry Hill, N.J.) each drove in runs for the Retrievers in the contest.

UMBC falls to 20-21, 6-12 AE while the Seawolves improve to 24-15, 13-5 AE on the year.

The Retrievers got things going in the second with Joey Goodwin reaching on a one out single and was brought in on a Joe Milkowski single down the right field line just pitches later to give UMBC the early 1-0 lead.

They would tack on another in the third, getting an RBI double from Wright that scored Terrence Pinkston (La Plata, Md./McDonough/Norfolk State) to give UMBC the 2-0 advantage.

UMBC starter Bryan Gilliam (Mechanicsville, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) would keep the Seawolves at bay for most of the game, pitching five shutout innings before being taken out in the sixth. Stony Brook would finally cash in with a run in the sixth and seventh to tie it at 2-2.

Neither team could get much going late in the contest, until the Seawolves finally broke the tie in the 11th on a single from Brandon Janofsky. UMBC got a runner in scoring position in the 11th, but could not bring him home, dropping the rubber match 3-2.

Pinkston, Christian Torres (Miami, Fla.) and Beeman each had two hits with Milkowski and Wright driving in runs.

UMBC will return to action on Tuesday, April 30 when they travel to La Salle before hosting Georgetown on Wednesday, May 1.
