Men's Basketball Heads to Northern Colorado for Maui Jim Maui Regional Games

UMBC at Northern Colorado Game Notes

The UMBC Retrievers will compete in their first in-season tournament-style contests since 2008-09 when they open versus host Northern Colorado in the Maui Jim Maui Regional Games. The Retrievers won Columbia's Tyler Ugloyn Classic with victories over Quinnipiac and the host Lions in November of 2008. Austin Peay and Cal Poly face off at 2:30 p.m. (MST) at UNC's Bank of Colorado Arena, followed by the Retrievers and Bears at 5:00 p.m. local time.

Live stats will be available via and you can also follow via the men's basketball program's Twitter feed (UMBC_MBB). Fans can also access the live stats from UMBC Front Row, UMBC Athleitcs' mobile website.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: After a pair of competitive contests versus power conference opponents Wake Forest (78-73 L) and St. John's (75-53 L) UMBC (0-3) could not produce the same effort in the home opener against local rival Loyola and fell, 76-57. Sophomore guard Rodney Elliott was one of the few bright spots for UMBC, as he led the Retrievers with 19 points and became the second-fastest UMBC DI player to hit the 500-point mark, surpassing that figure in just 34 games.

Elliott leads the squad at 16.0 points per game, followed by freshman wing Joe Sherburne, who is at 12.0 points per outing.

BEAR UPDATE:  Northern Colorado (1-1) opened with a 109-72 loss at Kansas and then commenced their home slate with an 85-70 victory over Colorado Christian on Tuesday. All five Bears scored in double figures versus CCU, including junior guard Anthony Johnson, show scored 19 points. Backcourt mate and former Air Force transfer Cameron Mitchell averages a team-high 18.5 points per game, while Johnson is at 18.0 points per contest.

Head Coach B.J. Hill took the Bears to the NCAA Tournament in his first season as head coach in 2010-11.

SERIES NOTES:  The two universities have never met in any type of intercollegiate competition and this is UMBC's first-ever trip to Colorado in the sport of men's basketball.      Northern Arizona is the only Big Sky Conference member that UMBC has competed against in men's basketball. The Retrievers won both match-ups with NAU (1986, 1988), including UMBC's first-ever NCAA Division I victory, at 69-66 triumph in the fall of 1986.

WHO'S UP NEXT: UMBC will meet either Austin Peay (0-3, entering weekend) or Cal Poly (1-2) at 2:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Retrievers return to Baltimore for Thanksgiving week home contests versus Navy (Nov. 25, 7 p.m.) and Colgate (Nov. 28, 1 p.m.).
