Swimming and Diving Picks Up Three #AESD Awards

BOSTON, Mass. - Three members of the UMBC swimming and diving team were honored with America East Performer of the Week awards, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.


Juniors Hania Moro (New Cairo, Egypt) and Alexander Gliese (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) took home the swimming awards, while classmate Leo Buoye (Spencerport, N.Y.) picked up Male Diver of the Week.


Moro earned her second Female Swimmer of the Week award after finishing in three individual events while helping the Retrievers to a 161-134 win over Old Dominion. She touched in first in the 100 free with a season-best time of 52.97, while also finishing first in the 200 free with a time 1:52.75 and 500 free in a time of 5:04.99. Moro also helped the 400 free relay to a first place finish with a time of 3:32.98.


Gliese earns his second Male Swimmer of the Week after breaking two Old Dominion pool records while helping UMBC to a 164-133 win over the Monarchs on Saturday. Gliese's record-breaking performances came in the 100 and 200 back; he touched in the 100 back in a time of 50.47, while swimming the 200 back in a time of 1:49.60. Both times were also season-bests for Gliese. Gliese also helped the men start the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, winning the race in a time of 1:31.94.


Buoye was named Male Diver of the Week for the first time after finishing second in the 1 meter dive with a score of 241.00. He also finished second in the 3 meter dive with a score of 230.20.


The Retrievers will return to the pool November 16-18 when they head to Virginia to compete in the George Mason Invitational.
