Boston, Mass. -- Sophomore P/OF Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named the 2020 America East Softball Scholar-Athlete the conference announced on Thursday afternoon. Despite the cancellation of the spring sports season, Coppersmith was one of six standout student-athletes who displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their collegiate careers. The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the spring season including baseball, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track & field and softball. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50. Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
Last month, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, the organization announced Thursday. She is the first Retriever softball player to earn Academic All-District First Team Honors since 2008, and the first to be named Academic All-District, in any capacity, since 2010. She was also named to the 2020 America East All-Academic Team The biochemistry major has a 3.765 GPA and has earned multiple academic awards: Fall 2018 President's List , Spring 2019 Dean's List and Fall 2019 Semester Academic Honors. On the field, she was tops in the nation in ERA (0.19) when season ended in March. Was 3-1 with 1 save in 2020, with 82 strikeouts in 37 innings. At the plate, she was batting .371 (.714 slg )with 3 homers and 8 RBI when the season ended. Was an All-American last season, and was AE Pitcher and Rookie of the Year, AE Championship Most Outstanding Player, first team All-AE pitcher and 2nd team All-AE DP. in 2019, went 21-14, with 1 save, a 1.97 ERA and 346 strikeouts. At the plate in 2019, she batted .294 with a homer and 18 RBI. Coppersmith was also a member of the 2019 America East Helping Hands Team.
