Volleyball Drops AE Opener at Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Host Stony Brook took control early and defeated the UMBC volleyball squad, 3-0, in the opening match of the America East season for both squads at Pritchard Gym. The Seawolves prevailed, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 to improve to 5-12 overall, while UMBC slipped to 6-9.

The Retrievers hung close in the first set, trailing just 19-17 after a kill by sophomore Marissa Duncan (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron). But the Seawolves scored three of the next four points and held off the visitors, 25-22.

UMBC has its latest lead of the match in the second set, as senior Paige Miller (Reading, Pa.) posted a kill to give the Retrievers an 18-17 advantage. However, SBU scored the next six points of the match and went to the locker room with identical 25-22 set wins.

UMBC took a brief 5-4 lead in the third set, but the hosts went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 advantage. The Retrievers closed the gap to 18-16, but another late game surge by the hosts ended the hopes of a UMBC rally.

UMBC hit only .120 for the match, compared to .204 from the hosts. The visitors struggled from the service line, misfiring on 12 attempts and recording just three service aces.

Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan.) led UMBC with nine kills, while sophomore Paolo Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico), making her season debut, added seven. Freshman Claudia Lopez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led UMBC with 14 assists, while classmate Carola DeJesus (San Juan, Puerto Rico) contributed a team-best nine digs.

The Retrievers return to the court on Friday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Lowell, Mass., to take on the River Hawks of UMass Lowell.
